Tiny house update

Yes the tiny house is still our goal. We are trying very hard to stay on budget so that we can pay down the debt we do have and start saving for our big purchase, The trailer. I made the mistake of searching craigslist one day for materials that we could use... I found almost everything we need! A lot of wood from old barn and houses that would be great for the interior/exterior as well as windows and doors. I even found two options for the french door entry I want for almost nothing. Definitely makes waiting harder but we are committed to starting out our tiny house journey debt free (except for school loans). So for now I will take it as a sign that our plans are completely realistic and we are on the right track.
We have been able to continually down size our belongings. Basically we are working through one room at a time and either selling, giving away, or throwing out unneeded/unwanted items. It is an exhilarating feeling honestly. Fair warning though, it's not all that easy. Some things, like Ry's baby items, have been things we have had to discuss whether or not they are needed. Matthew and I have never done anything with our baby items that were kept and do not see the reason for keeping such things, especially when someone else could use them. The important things are the photos of Ry and those don't take up much space. We came to the point where we decided (it may not be for everyone but it is how we feel) that we would rather have all the photos of our memories over any actual material item. For instance, the pictures of Matthew dressing Ry for the first time and holding him in the outfit he came home in rather than keeping the outfit. To us the memories and photos are more valuable and the outfit could keep another baby warm and create memories for another family. Like I said, this is just how we have decided to handle such items that hold more sentimental value than functionality. We have a long way to go before we will be ready but I feel we are making progress and learning to live more minimalistic with each day.
Another aspect we have been working on is our buying habits. After reading multiple blogs and articles about tiny house dwellers and their day to day struggles I feel this will probably be the hardest part to contain for us. The idea is that you only buy what you absolutely need. Once in the tiny house you do not have much choice due to lack of space to store it but I know that doesn't make it any easier. While we are still living in our 1100 sq. ft. townhouse though, it seems harder. I am consistently asking myself do we need this item?, Where will we store it?, What function does it serve?, and what item does this replace? So far we have done well. A couple months ago Matthew accidentally burnt some soup to the bottom of our dutch oven and it was not salvageable. Instead of buying a replacement right away we have found a way to use the pans we have to replace that one. At first it was simply because we didn't have the money to replace it. Then one night I needed that pan for a dish I was making and we didn't want to go to the store so we just made it work. Since then we have decided that we probably only need a few pans and as the ones we have give out we will just adjust to what we have until we absolutely have to replace one.
For now baby steps toward the minimalist life style is all we can manage but I believe we are well on our way to the tiny house lifestyle and our dream of owning a tiny home.
