The Future...

Recently (while on break at work) I found a documentary on building a Tiny house called Tiny: A story about living small on Netflix. After watching this documentary I shared it with Matthew and we both started thinking and discussing the possibilities of such a space in our own future. It also reminded us of a few years ago when we found a youtube video about a couple who downsized to a house on wheels, off the grid. Back then we had thought how awesome that was but never feasible for us. Now with the new career and him going back to school for a career, the idea of saving up and building our own tiny home is in the realm of possibilities. So we started doing some research and looking more in depth at what this would take. As far as money goes it is simply a matter of making it happen and is only as expensive as you make it to be. Thousands of people have converted to smaller dwellings and made it work, so why not us or anyone else.
After more thought about whether or not this is something we really want to do or just a dream that sounds cool, we have come to the conclusion that we both really want this. It is a HUGE project that will require a lot of time, effort, and money though. With this in mind we started hashing out a plan to make this dream a reality. So far we have decided how to pay down debt we currently have so that we can start saving money for the building process. We have set up a budget to hopefully get us to that point by this time next year (Sept. 2015) or earlier. after that we will be saving as much as possible to help with the first phase of building or maybe even enough for the whole project.
The next discussion we had was whether or not we plan to do this while Rylence is still living with us or if this will be after it is just the two of us again. That is still a huge decision and one that we are trying to process all the details involved. We also plan to wait until we have enough to even consider starting the building process and then ask Rylence his opinion. This is right now the biggest decision we have to make about the future of our tiny home but also the one that has to wait.
The actual home itself we have some ideas about. We know we would like it to be on wheels so that we can travel if necessary or desired. We are also collecting ideas that we see in other tiny homes and writing down the ones that we think may be possible. Since we have ample time until we have to make decisions about blue prints we are also going through all possibilities about amenities as well. One by one we are discussing pros and cons of having specific things or the alternative. For example, a small oven and range or just the cook top with a toaster oven? There are also many other details we have to hash out, like mail. Then we have the purging process. A tiny space does not leave much room for clutter or excess "stuff". So we are also planning over the next few years to start downsizing our belongings so that when we are ready to move to the tiny house we are close to ready.
The whole idea is exciting to us. We are happy that we have time to decide the big things and work out all the details as well though. We will be updating as we make progress on this goal. If you have any questions or want to know more ask us or google the tiny house movement. Have a great weekend!
